Many JUCO sophomores (2013 class) have seen their recruitment pick up of late, which is normal for this time of year when schools begin to make a strong push to get commitments before the April signing period. Most players will take their visits after the season before making a decision. Here is a look at the latest junior college basketball recruiting news:
On Wednesday, Algie Key (6-4/SG/2013) of Barton CC had Alabama head coach Anthony Grant watch him as he scored 27 points in a win over Colby CC.
South Carolina watched Elgin Cook (6-6/SF/2013) of NW Florida State on Wednesday. Here is a detailed look at Cook’s recruitment.
Georgia and Rutgers were at Vincennes on Thursday to take a look at 2013′s Deshawn Delaney (6-5/G) and Darius Carter (6-7/F).
Bobby Hunter (5’11/PG/2013) is currently leading the country in scoring at 24.8 points per game. Hunter recently picked up an offer from Iona. He also has strong interest from Evansville and Murray State.
Canisius has offered Jeremiah Williams of Vincennes. Williams is a 5’11 point guard.
Dre Mathieu (5-9/PG/2013), a Morehead State transfer currently at Central Arizona, now has offers from Tennessee Tech, UT – San Antonio, Stephen F. Austin, Northern Arizona, Albany and Northern Colorado. Mathieu is having a great year averaging 18 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists per game.
DesJuan Newton (6-3/G/2013) has strong interest from Eastern Washington, Southern and Quinnipiac and is hearing from Portland St. and SE Missouri St. He is averaging 18 points per game.
Brad,
How do you think Bobby Hunter would fit in at Iona, and could you see him taking over for Momo Jones.
The most underrated juco player in the country is Alex Marzette, sophomore 6-5 shooting guard for Volunteer state Community College. Not only is shooting nearly 50% from behind the arc in conference play, he has a 39 inch vertical. And is a great defender. He is NBA bound.
Brad,
Do you only follow D1 Juco’s? I am a BGSU alum and have been down to Owens Tech to see James Kelly play. I know BG had offered him last year but have heard we have no chance at getting him now. I heard he has been offered by Marshall, St. Bonaventure, Louisiana Tech, and even New Mexico and University of Miami (FL). There was also an article in the Toledo Blade that said that Michigan State has been down to see him several times. What do you know about him? What level is he truly? Have you heard any news? Thanks for the help!
John
