For the second consecutive season, the No. 1 Salt Lake Community College Men's Basketball team won the Mesa Community College Shootout, earning them our first Team of The Week for 2023.

In a championship game that featured six lead changes, the Bruins earned the win in the paint, posting a 28-18 advantage inside and a 34-22 edge in rebounding. Salt Lake also held a 29-2 edge in bench points. Jaquan Scott, a Mississippi State signee, finished with 17 points, going 7-of-12 from the floor. Tyson Garff had 15 points off the bench, while Alejandro Vasquez (UAB signee) finished with 10 points.

In the semifinals, SLCC squared off with another NJCAA power in #14 South Plains College out of Levelland, TX.  The Bruins raced out to a 9-0 run, but could not keep the distance and the Texans made it a close game late.  Salt Lake was able to hold onto a 77-76 win behind Alejandro Vasquez, who finished with 23 points after going 9-of-9 from the foul line. Jaquan Scott posted 14 points, while Andre Mulibea finished with 12 points.

The first game of the Shootout was a 119-67 win vs Justice College, who was a late fill-in for Central Arizona who had travel issues over the holidays.  Salt Lake will return to Scenic West Athletic Conference play next week, facing off against the College of Southern Nevada on Wednesday.
