Won vs Southwestern Illinois 76-63

Moberly Area Community College is our first Team of The Week for 2023, as they rang in the new year by going on the road and picking up a win at #5 Indian Hills, which is always a difficult place to play.  They finished the week off strong by defeating a 10-4 Southwestern Illinois team at home 76-63.  The pair of wins takes MACC to 13-3 on the season, coming off of a National Tournament appearance in 2022.

Against IHCC, the Greyhounds led by as many as 18 in the 2nd half.  This win was the first in 11 tries for MACC against the Warriors, who have a longstanding series dating back many years with the midwest programs.  Tre’von Spillers had a monster game with 30 points, 12 rebounds (6 offensive), and 6 blocks.  Ultra quick point guard Jaheim Tanksley, who transferred in from Frank Phillips, finished with 20 points on 3-5 3pt shooting to help Moberly leave town with the Top 5 upset.

Returning home MACC shot 53% from the floor in disposing of a tough Southwestern Illinois team (SWIC has been receiving votes in the NJCAA Top 25 at different points this season) on Saturday night.  MACC got a balanced scoring attack from its starting lineup that accounted for 65 of its 76 total points.  Brandon Hall led the way with 18 points, connecting on 3-9 from downtown, and Tedrick Washington tallied 17 points on 3-6 from 3pt land.  Overall the Greyhounds were 10-24 from deep in the win.

Coach Pat Smith’s group will turn to league action this week at home vs State Fair on Wednesday, and a key matchup at Mineral Area on Saturday.
