The Florida College Shootout took place at Santa Fe College and the College of Central Florida this weekend. The best junior college teams in the state went head to head and two of them were able to stay undefeated.

Palm Beach State (14-0/ranked #9 in last week’s NJCAA poll) won two games on the weekend. They beat host Santa Fe College on Saturday by 17 and followed that up by handing #2 NW Florida State their first lost of the season. Palm Beach State forward Jonathan Holton, who transferred in from Rhode Island, was extremely impressive. Holton (signed with Florida International) had 18 points and 21 rebounds against NW Florida State. Kevin Thomas (6-9/F), who signed with Texas out of high school, had a solid performance as well. Thomas had 9 points and 10 rebounds and has added some muscle since last season. He looks much better around the rim when playing through contact. Freshman guard Carrington Ward dropped in 17 points for Palm Beach as well.

Chipola College (13-0/ranked #6 in last week’s NJCAA poll) played extremely well with two convincing wins over Polk State (78-46) and St. Petersburg (73-56). Pat Blake has his players defending and sharing the ball at a high level. Chris Thomas, who is headed to Manhattan next year, was excellent in transition and passed the ball well in the half court offense and transition settings. He finished yesterday’s game with 16 points and 9 assists. Freshman guard Demetrius Floyd shot the ball well and led both teams in scoring with 20 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field. Sophomore post player Kruize Pinkins had 17 points and pulled in 8 rebounds . Sophomore forward Earl Watson (signed with Wichita State) and freshman post player Cinmeon Bowers both were very physical and productive in the win over St. Pete as well.
