JUCO recruiting is much different than high school recruiting, especially considering how long it usually takes for a JC freshman to see his recruitment pick up. Interest and offers for prospects entering their sophomore year usually begin to pick up in the late spring/early summer and this year is no different.  The 2016 JUCO class is very deep and has the potential to be a very good class with plenty of high major players.

Over the late spring and throughout the summer we will preview some of the top 2016 prospects and take a look at their recruitment. JC players see their recruitment heat up in a hurry at elite JUCO events during the July “live” recruiting period, so the recruitment could quickly change for some of these players. In the past there have been a handful of players who have made their decision in June and decided to not play in any summer events leading up to their final year of JC.

Today we will take a look at Emmanuel Malou, a 6’9 guard/forward at Yuba College (CA), who is easily one of the top prospects in the 2016 class. Malou has plenty of interest from mid and high-major programs around the country and has also had a handful of NBA teams in to see him during his freshman year. He was born in Sudan before moving to Melbourne, Australia and is a citizen of Australia.  Malou spent a year at ABCD prep in Iowa, but didn’t qualify and then went the JC route.

We were able to take a good look at Malou at the All-American JUCO Showcase in Los Angeles during the April live recruiting period. He is extremely skilled for his size and does an excellent job of stretching the floor. While Malou is very skilled on the perimeter, he isn’t scared to mix it up in the paint. He has very good footwork in the low and mid post and is a good athlete who finishes above the rim. He is a good rebounder and also blocks and alters plenty of shots with his length. Malou’s ball handling is solid as well, especially for someone his size. After watching him, it isnt’ a mystery why some NBA teams are taking a look at him in case he enters the 2016 NBA Draft after his second year of JC. He needs to add some size/strength if he wants to be in the mix at that level, but it looks like Malou is working on his frame this spring/summer.

Malou hasn’t decided what he will do after next season. He has plenty of options if he attempts to move on to a four-year school as a member of the 2016 class. He has heard from Iowa State recently, who recruited him when he was at prep school. Here is a look at the schools who have been in contact with Malou recently: USC, Iowa State, Arizona State, Texas Tech, Gonzaga, Nevada, Colorado State and Mississippi State.

Along with all of the college interest, Malou had multiple NBA teams in to see him during the season including the Phoenix Suns, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, Utah Jazz and Detroit Pistons. He also had calls from the Portland Trailblazers and Sacramento Kings.

Stay tuned for updates on Malou and plenty of other 2016 JUCO prospects.
