This past weekend in Dallas, Mike Mitchell held his 6th annual Texas East-West Challenge with 12 teams (11 from TX, 1 from MO) including preseason #2 South Plains, #7 Odessa, #15 Trinity Valley and #16 Missouri West Plains.  Here were the standouts:

Tyson Jolly, Trinity Valley – 6’4 G, 2019

The Baylor transfer was impressive getting to the rim and grabbing boards. Jolly is one of most athletic and physical guards in JUCO. He finished at the rim with powerful dunks and also made several jumpers from deep. He defends at a high level and can guard multiple positions.  He averaged 36.5 ppg and 14.5 rpg in his 2 games this past weekend. Jolly has lots of interest but currently has no offers.

Lenell Henry, Panola – 6’7 PF, 2019

The Northern Arizona transfer has motor, length and athleticism to go along with a solid skillset. He seems to always come down with a rebound or keep the ball alive when going for offensive boards. He scores with his back to the basket and showed the ability to stretch the floor going 3-6 from 3. Henry averaged 14.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg in 2 games.

Trey Wade, South Plains – 6’7 F, 2019 (Pictured)

The UTEP transfer showed his athleticism and versatility this past weekend filling up the stat sheet in every category. Wade finished at the rim with powerful dunks and hit a couple of catch and shoot 3’s. With his size and athleticism, Wade can guard almost every player on the court. He averaged 13.5 ppg and 10 rpg while also getting 7 blocks over the 2 games. Wade has offers from Georgia State, UAB, North Texas, Idaho, Eastern Michigan, Long Beach St, and Towson as well as interest from Georgia and Arkansas.

James Reese, Odessa – 6’4 SG, 2019

The Buffalo transfer is one of the best 3 point shooters in JUCO. He does a great job coming off down screens or staggers looking to shoot. He has quick release and really elevates on his jumper. He is great athlete and excels in transition finishing at the rim. He averaged 19.7 ppg over 3 games while shooting 12/18 from 3. Reese has offers from Louisiana Monroe, Mercer, Jacksonville St, Robert Morris, and USC Upstate.

Sardaar Calhoun, Missouri West Plains – 6’6 SG, 2020*

Calhoun is one of the more complete scorers in all of JUCO. He scored the ball at all 3 levels: hitting several 3’s, making tough midrange pullup jumpers and finishing strong at the rim. He averaged 21.5 ppg over 2 games. Calhoun is a freshman Qualifier that could possibly leave with 3 years to play and join the 2019 class.

Ellis Jefferson, Clarendon - 6’2 CG, 2019

Jefferson has one of quickest releases in JUCO and is great when he is able to catch and shoot. He has range on his jumper and can knock down deep 3’s. He mixes it up and rebounds well from the guard position. He does solid job of setting up teammates as well. Jefferson averaged 17 ppg, 8 rpg and 4 apg over 2 games.

Jaekwon Carlyle, 6’0 CG 2019 & Raymond Kowalski, 6’3 SG 2019 – Grayson

This duo scored in bunches all weekend and helped lead their team to a 3-0 start.  Carlyle (Hampton Transfer) averaged 29.3 ppg and Kowalski (SEMO Transfer) averaged 20.3 ppg. They combined for 28 3’s over the weekend. Carlyle did a great job creating and getting into the paint to score and set up teammates.
